Welcome from the Head
The young people come first at Great Wyrley High School and, with them we relentlessly pursue excellence.
We have been a traditional community focused school since the 1930s and our approach to teaching and learning is one of co-operation, mutual support, challenge, pride and joy. Assessment is an active part of every lesson and our students are given precise and immediate feedback to improve their learning, we call this PIFIL. We engage our young people in their lessons using accelerated approaches where we connect new knowledge to what they already know, make the lessons active, ensure students demonstrate what they have learnt and consolidate what they have learnt by teaching and explaining to their teachers and peers.
We set high standards of behaviour and uniform in school and firmly believe that no child should have to tolerate disturbances in their lessons. We are proud of our school and expect every student to look and behave in keeping with our vision and standards. We will not accept excuses for disruption or tardiness and act swiftly and firmly to remedy these issues on behalf of every child.
We have created an Excellence Academy for those students that have demonstrated the capacity to work hard and achieve success. These students receive additional lessons every week in a wide range of disciplines to broaden their horizons and prepare them for higher education in prestigious universities. To support a broad curriculum, a number of trips and visits are organised which this year include: Iceland, Berlin, Andorra (skiing), Disneyland Paris, Belgium (our Soul Band tour), battle fields of France and Belgium, South Africa, Harry Potter Studios, many universities and colleges, museums, memorial occasions and much more.
We have a long history of excellent achievement in sport and performing arts and boast teams and groups that visit a host of locations to play and perform. Our school shows are highly regarded and our Great Wyrley Festival is a magnet for high quality performances.
This year we launch Great Wyrley College. We will be offering a wide variety of courses for post 16 students including traditional ‘A’ levels, GCSE and new vocational courses. We have developed a network of employers that we will be working alongside to provide ‘pre-apprenticeship’ courses to prepare our young people for the world of work. This will involve work experience placements for half of the week and in-school provision the rest of the time following BTEC programmes of study geared up for full employment.
Great Wyrley High School is a new school on a traditional site, your child will be encouraged to try out new things, learn from their inevitable failures and aspire not to have the best but to be the best. Your child will be safe, happy and educated in our school.
Students with special educational needs are well supported by a large department of teaching assistants led by a very experienced special educational needs co-coordinator. Every young person has a learning passport to help teachers meet specific areas of need and regular monitoring ensures no child is left behind. In our school every child really does matter.
